浅玫瑰色结晶性粉末，熔点200~202℃， 易溶于乙醇﹑醚﹑甲醇及稀氢氧化碱溶液。稍溶于苯﹑甲苯及二甲苯，微溶于水，几乎不溶于石油醚。 在碱性溶液中呈蓝色，在酸性溶液中呈黄色。
溴麝香草酚蓝是一种酸碱指示剂，变色范围pH6.0(黄)~7.6(蓝)。
普通水是中性，pH也就是7左右，差不多呈淡蓝.
溶有二氧化碳后，由于会形成碳酸，碳酸是弱酸，因此pH不会降太多，变黄。
当中过渡颜色是绿色或检测CO2的产生:使澄清石灰水变浑浊，并使溴麝香草酚蓝水溶液由蓝变绿再变黄。
