广泛用于科研·大专院校·医疗卫生·工矿企业等单位的化验室，作量取各种不同体积的液体之用，或对不规则的固体物质，作体积计算用，有时也可作玻璃筒或接受器之用，具塞量筒主要是用于易挥发液体的计量，或作溶液的稀释配制之用。任何量筒都是作为计量溶液体积之用，切勿用于贮藏液体，因酸液或碱液对玻璃都有侵蚀作用。
使用前必须清洗，干燥后放平，然后将溶液注至略高于所需容量的刻度线上，再慢慢倒去多余部分，至溶液的弯月面下缘恰在所需容量的刻度线上缘，即为所需计量之容量，溶液从筒中倾出时要慢慢从嘴倾出，后将筒口与器壁相接触，以移出后的溶液。

量筒是一个细长的玻璃筒，由于筒身细长，比同体积的量杯液面小，其容量度比量杯相对准确，筒底部有一宽边底座，能保持在倾斜30度的情况下不倒，筒的上口制有倾出嘴，便于倾出液体。
具塞量筒除与量筒造型基本相同外，筒的上口不具倾出嘴，而制成收缩形的瓶口，并具有磨砂玻璃塞。
