毛巾上常常沾染有人体分泌物，这其中就有许多的致病性微生物，如沙眼衣原体、金黄色葡萄球菌、淋球菌及霉菌等，因此，提倡每星期消毒。消毒方法有以下几种：
●蒸煮消毒法。把毛巾先用开水煮沸10分钟左右，然后再用肥皂水清洗，晾干后就可以使用了；
●微波消毒法。将毛巾清洗干净，折叠好后放在微波炉中，运行5分钟就可以达到消毒目的；
●高压蒸气消毒法。将毛巾放入高压锅中，加热保持30分钟左右，就可以灭绝大多数微生物；
●化学消毒剂消毒法。消毒剂可以选择稀释200倍的清洗消毒剂，将毛巾浸泡在溶液中15分钟以上，然后取出毛巾用清水漂洗，将残余的消毒剂去除干净，晾干后就可以再次放心使用了。
