艾绒是由艾叶经过反复晒杵、捶打、粉碎，筛除杂质、粉尘，而得到的软细如棉的物品。艾绒是制作艾条的原材料，也是灸法所用的主要材料。
由菊科植物艾蒿的干叶制成。其色泽灰白，柔软如绒，易燃而不起火焰，气味芳香，适合灸用。根据加工程度的不同有粗细之分，粗者多用于温针或制作艾条，细者多用于制作艾炷。质地以陈年者为佳。
李时珍《本草纲目》里说:“凡用艾叶，须用陈久者，治令软细，谓之熟艾；若生艾，灸火则易伤人肌脉。”故在选用艾绒时，多用陈艾绒为宜。在艾灸过程中，纯度为10:1以下的艾绒适合做温和灸，10:1以上的艾绒可做直接灸。
