艾灸即艾草灸，艾绒是由艾叶经过反复晒杵、捶打、粉碎，筛除杂质、粉尘，而得到的软细如棉的物品。艾绒是制作艾条的原材料，也是艾灸所用的主要材料。由菊科植物艾蒿的干叶制成。其色泽灰白，柔软如绒，易燃而不起火焰，气味芳香，适合灸用。根据加工程度的不同有粗细之分，粗者多用于温针或制作艾条，细者多用于制作艾炷。质地以陈年者为佳。
“凡用艾叶，须用陈久者，令软细，谓之熟艾；若生艾，艾灸则。”故在选用艾绒时，多用陈艾绒为宜。在艾灸过程中， 为10:1以下的艾绒适合做温和灸，10:1以上的 艾绒可做直接灸。根据艾绒，制作人们日常生活中用品，如艾绒肚兜、枕头、坐垫、鞋垫、艾绒衣物、等）及艾绒被子和艾绒泡脚袋、沐浴包等艾绒制品。
