镁砖是用大于87%的烧结镁石作原料，制品中以方镁石为主晶相，还有复合尖晶石、钙镁橄榄石、镁橄榄石以及少量玻璃相的碱性耐火材料。
镁砖抗碱性强， 抗酸性弱(尤其对B2O3有很强的助熔作用,在镁砖中千分之几的B203在 1200~1250℃下能使镁砖的抗蠕变性能变差)，由于它的基质结合成分主要是CMS-M2S系统，故其导热性能良好但随温度升高而变差，热容量随温度升高而增大，耐火度高。但其荷重软化温度只有l550℃左右。
