MQuant®总硬度试纸可用于测量水的硬度。给定水样的硬度意为其碱土金属盐含量，包括钙、镁、锶和钡（“硬化成分”，后两者化合物仅有微量）金属。在绿色指示剂的存在下，硬度离子Ca2+和Mg2+与Titriplex® (III)（EDTA二钠盐）反应生成稳定的无色络合物。相对于Titriplex® (III)过量的硬度离子与指示剂反应生成红色络合物。试纸的各反应区浸渍不同含量的Titriplex® (III)，因此根据水样硬度的不同，会呈现绿色至红色。通过目视比较试纸条的各反应区与比色卡的色带，可半定量测定硬度。其他灵敏度和分度的测量参见其他MQuant®测试，以及我们的Reflectoquant®和Spectroquant®测试系列。
